HPGE Animation Creation (Stopmotion)
About this program
In this engaging Stop Motion Animation workshop, students use the Stop Motion Studio app on iPads to bring their creative ideas to life. Through hands-on experience, students will develop key digital literacy skills as they learn to operate the app and master iPad camera functions.
The program enhances creativity and storytelling by guiding students to plan, create, and sequence visual narratives that demonstrate the fundamental principles of animation, including frame-by-frame movement, timing, and pacing. Students will refine their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as they manipulate objects precisely to create each frame of their animation.
Designed to encourage collaboration, teamwork is a vital part of group stop motion projects, while problem-solving and critical thinking are developed as students troubleshoot and refine their animations. The workshop also supports planning and organisation through storyboarding and sequencing scenes, while introducing visual arts concepts such as composition, perspective, and lighting.
Students can work with various materials such as clay, cut paper shapes, LEGO, or everyday objects to create short animated videos, combining literacy, technology, and art in an integrated, cross-curricular learning experience. Upon completion, student animations will be available to view on a Google website, showcasing their creativity and digital skills.
Learning Intentions and Success Criteria
We are learning to:
Digital Technology
- Develop skills to effectively use digital tools, including the Stop Motion Studio app and iPad camera functions.
- Understand and apply key animation principles such as frame-by-frame movement, timing, and pacing.
- Use problem-solving and critical thinking techniques to troubleshoot and improve digital projects.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively in group settings to complete creative digital tasks.
Visual Arts
- Explore and apply visual arts concepts such as composition, perspective, and lighting in creating animations.
- Refine fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through detailed manipulation of objects for stop motion frames.
- Plan and organise visual narratives by developing storyboards and sequencing scenes.
- Express creativity and storytelling through digital animation projects using various materials (clay, paper shapes, LEGO, objects).
English / Literacy
- Develop storytelling skills by planning, creating, and sequencing narratives.
- Communicate ideas clearly using visual language and sequencing techniques.
We can:
- Operate the Stop Motion Studio app and iPad camera confidently to capture animations.
- Explain and demonstrate the principles of animation: frame-by-frame movement, timing, and pacing.
- Plan stories using storyboards and sequence scenes logically before creating animations.
- Manipulate objects with care and precision to create smooth, continuous animation frames.
- Work collaboratively with peers to produce group animation projects, sharing ideas and responsibilities.
- Identify and solve technical problems that arise during animation production.
- Apply visual arts concepts such as composition, perspective, and lighting to enhance the quality of their animations.
- Tell a clear and engaging story through visual sequences.
- Reflect on their own and others' animations, providing constructive feedback.
