HPGE Numeracy in Nature

About this program

Join us for a High Potential & Gifted Education (HPGE) Numeracy in Nature Day!

The program covers elements of the creative, intellectual and social-emotional domains.

Rumbalara EEC teachers will come to your school as an incursion to identify students who have an interest in Maths and would benefit from developing their environmental maths skills at a high level.

The identified students will then be invited to participate in a second full day environmental maths workshop with a specialised maths teacher and environmental scientist.

Program activities

Use your maths skills to explore nature within your school environment!

Students will work in small groups to move through a variety of activities located around the school grounds.

At the end of this day, students will be able to apply mathematical concepts and skills to practical activities in nature. Instructions will be provided and assistance as required, to allow student groups to independently reach conclusions and obtain data.

This session will involve hands-on teamwork activities involving "maths in the environment".

Student Activities will include some of the following:

Quadrats and Transects
Students will gather plant and animal data using quadrats and transects (including estimating percentage).
Patterns and Symmetry
Look for patterns and symmetry in nature - including sorting and grouping objects.
Record Measurements
Use scientific equipment to record measurements of our environment - including temperature and light.
Measure Circumference and estimate Heights
Measure circumference of trees and estimate heights - in order to calculate carbon stored by trees (challenge / difficult)
Water Scientist
Become a water scientist by measuring water quality from a local creek or stream (pending school location)
Navigation Skills
Use navigation skills and measurement to construct a polygon.
