About this Program

Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre offers engaging NAIDOC Day activities designed to celebrate and honour Aboriginal culture and heritage. This program can be run as an incursion or excursion (pending on student numbers) at a suitable location. We are happy to collaborate with other Aboriginal presenters or organisations involved in your event to create a meaningful and inclusive experience for your students.

Examples of Program Activities

Interactive exploration
Interactive exploration of Aboriginal tools and resources, such as boomerangs, spears and axes, gaining a deeper understanding of Aboriginal Culture and lifestyle. Through inquiry-based learning, they will answer questions and examine both primary and secondary sources to enrich their knowledge.
Investigate Cultural burning
Investigate why fire would have been important to the Aboriginal Peoples’ when caring for Country. View historical photos of Aboriginal Peoples using Cultural burning in fire management. Learn how to make fire using sticks.
Tracks & Scats
Investigate how Aboriginal people tracked local animals. They will observe and collect different types of evidence found in the bush such as animal scats, scratches on trees, footprints, shed snake skin, feathers, and even listen to animal calls. Using detailed identification charts, students will compare their findings to help identify which animals have been in the area. They will then look for evidence of animals in the school playground.
Aboriginal Bush Tucker
Students will learn about Aboriginal bush tucker plants, discovering traditional uses and photograph native plants with iPads. These will then be placed in the ‘Book Creator’ App and downloaded as a learning resource.
