Early Stage 1 Science and Technology - Bush Picnic

Encourage students to actively engage their senses to explore and describe the unique features and characteristics of the local environment.
Students will explore how living organisms obtain air, water, and energy essential for their survival within different environments.

About this excursion

This exciting Kindergarten program invites students to a bush picnic in a beautiful location on the Central Coast, NSW. Our most popular locations are Girrakool Picnic Area, Brisbane Water National Park and Norah Head. Through interactive games, sensory activities, and a guided bushwalk, students will explore nature, learn about the needs of living things, and discover how to care for Country.

Learning Experiences

Introductory Game
Using their own Australian soft toy animals, students will discuss animals of the local environment and explore the basic needs of plants and animals. They will then play a P.A.W.S (Plants for food, Air, Water, Shelter) tag game to reinforce these concepts.
Bushwalk through the Forest
As they walk through the forest, students will use their senses to explore the needs of living things. They will match colour cards to the bush, listen to sounds, feel textures, and discover bush scents. They will also identify P.A.W.S. features in the forest and learn about Aboriginal uses of plants.
Bush Picnic – optional

After the bushwalk, students discover their lunches and soft toys are missing! Students will discover their soft toy animals are already eating their lunch on a pre set up picnic cloth.

* Teacher and parent assistance will be required and gratefully appreciated in this secret set up.

Activities & Games
Activities may include designing animal shelters, using magnifying glasses, making leaf and bark rubbings and playing an Aboriginal game with an environmental message. A teacher may be asked to lead a Rumbalara activity, depending on student numbers.
