Stage 2 HSIE - Our Aboriginal Heritage

About this excursion

Join us on our fascinating Aboriginal Heritage excursion where students will discover the traditional lifestyles of the Aboriginal Peoples’ who lived on the Central Coast. They will understand the importance of connection to Country through an exploration of Brisbane Water National Park. Students will engage in hands-on activities throughout the day where they will learn an appreciation for the world’s oldest continuous living Culture.

Learning Experiences

Aboriginal tools and resources

Students will engage in an interactive exploration of Aboriginal tools and resources, such as boomerangs, spears and axes, gaining a deeper understanding of Aboriginal Culture and lifestyle. Through inquiry-based learning, they will answer questions and examine both primary and secondary sources to enrich their knowledge.

Students will investigate aspects of Aboriginal life by using fire sticks and will brainstorm reasons why fire would have been important to the Aboriginal Peoples’ when caring for Country.

Walk through Brisbane Water National Park
Students will learn about the Aboriginal bush supermarket, and they will see the bush as a resource for food, shelter, weapons and tools. Seasonal changes in availability will be observed and discussed. They will learn about the importance and close connection that Aboriginal Peoples’ had with their environment and local Country. Students will visit an Aboriginal engraving site and learn the importance of caring for such Cultural sites.
Bulgandry Aboriginal Engravings

The Bulgandry Art Site Aboriginal Place will be viewed and compared to the engraving site at Girrakool.

Students will have the option to be painted with ochre as a mark of respect to our traditional custodians. If time allows, students will participate in activities that include an Aboriginal game and a drawing of the engravings.
