Stage 2 Science & Technology - Physical & Living Systems, Rumbalara Reserve

About this excursion

Join us for an exciting Stage 2 science excursion as we dive into a fascinating investigation into our living world! This hands-on adventure will take students on a journey through Rumbalara Reserve where they will discover the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere and uncover how these systems interact to support life.

Students will have the opportunity to identify and observe both living and non-living things in a variety of habitats, and get a close-up look at invertebrates.

Learning Experiences

Bushwalk
The walk begins at Yaruga Picnic Area where students will enjoy a spectacular vista over Gosford city and Rumbalara Reserve. Here, students will discover the systems of the Earth that make up environments and learn about how these systems meet the needs of living things. The walk continues down to Rumbalara EEC. Along the way students will be given an identification chart to help identify and group living things throughout the walk. Students will also learn how Aboriginal Peoples’ utilise resources from local Country, for example, food, medicine, tools, weapons and shelter.
Invertebrate Investigation
Students will predict, discover and identify what types of invertebrates are living in the local environment. They will use scientific equipment to conduct the leaf litter dig and collect and record a variety of invertebrates. The data is collated using tallies and identification charts then analysed and interpreted using picture and column graphs.
Lab Activities
Students will use microscopes to closely examine different invertebrates and observe their similarities and differences. They will draw a scientific illustration of an invertebrate.
Food Chain Game
In this interactive activity, students will receive cards featuring various plants and animals, each representing a vital part of our ecosystem. Armed with their knowledge of food sources, participants will strategically hold onto their cards as they navigate the challenge of forming a complete food chain.

Key syllabus outcomes

Science and Technology (2024)

Physical and living systems depend on energy

A student:

ST2-SCI-01 uses information to investigate the solar system and the effects of energy on living, physical and geological systems

ST2-PQU-01 poses questions to create fair tests that investigate the effects of energy on living things and physical systems

ST2-DAT-01 uses and interprets data to describe patterns and relationships

Please let us know if you are working on an alternate syllabus version so we can adapt accordingly.
