Stage 2 Science & Technology - Physical & Living Systems, Wyrrabalong National Park
About this excursion
Join us for an exciting exploration of Wyrrabalong National Park, a spectacular and important area for plants and animals. Students will investigate the natural processes that have shaped the landscape of Bateau Bay.
Learning Intentions and Success Criteria
We are learning to:
- investigate the effects of energy on living, physical and geological systems
We can:
- identify and describe how forces shape the Earth’s surface
- discuss how living things depend on energy and materials to survive
Learning Experiences
Join us for an immersive bushwalk in Wyrrabalong National Park, where students will explore the diverse physical and living systems that make this ecosystem so unique. They will observe a variety of habitats and discover how plants and animals depend on one another for survival. Through hands-on learning, students will understand how energy flows between plants and animals via food chains.
Additionally, students will gain insight into the traditional knowledge of Aboriginal Peoples’, learning how cultural burning practices help maintain and support healthy habitats.
Activity One: Study of headland and rocks. Students will identify the thin layers of siltstone, shale and thicker sandstone beds that were laid down before the dinosaurs. They will observe how the headland and rocks have changed over time as a result of weathering and erosion and learn about the significance of the Crackneck Point Quarry to the Aboriginal Peoples’.
Activity Two: Students will investigate living things on the rock platform using a visual guide. Group discussion will include the topics of tides, what animals eat on the rock platforms and how they find their food e.g. filter feeders, grazers, scavengers, hunters.
Activity Three: Students will conduct a science investigation to test the processes of weathering and erosion. They will learn where sand comes from, what it is made of, the importance of sand dunes and the hardiness and role of the plants we find on dunes. They will then design and build their own model of a sand dune to be tested against the elements!

Science and Technology (2024)
Physical and living systems depend on energy
A student:
❀ ST2-SCI-01 uses information to investigate the solar system and the effects of energy on living, physical and geological systems
❀ ST2-PQU-01 poses questions to create fair tests that investigate the effects of energy on living things and physical systems
❀ ST2-DAT-01 uses and interprets data to describe patterns and relationships
Please let us know if you are working on an alternate syllabus version so we can adapt accordingly.
