Stage 3 HSIE – Fire-Ed Up! Kincumba Mountain or incursion
Students will participate in practical Fire-Ed Up activities, as well as spending time with volunteers from the Rural Fire Service and their fire trucks and equipment.
The aim is to prepare students for the risk of bushfires as well as build resilience in young people by increasing bushfire knowledge and to improve wellbeing.
About this incursion
Rumbalara has developed an award wining Fire-Ed Up Program, in partnership with Central Coast Council, the Central Coast Academy of STEM Excellence and the NSW Rural Fire Service.
To assist teachers with their programming, the Fire-Ed Up program includes a free hands-on 10 week program which prepares students for the risk of bushfires. The aim is to build resilience in young people by increasing bushfire knowledge and to improve wellbeing, all while covering HSIE syllabus outcomes.
Free staff professional learning and loan equipment is available to those completing the 10 week program.
Council Subsidised Excursion / Incursion
Central Coast Council has kindly agreed to subsidise a number of Fire-Ed Up excursions/incursions each year.
Learning Intentions and Success Criteria
We are learning to:
describe Aboriginal Knowledges and Practices that care for Country
examine global citizenship and how people organise, protect and sustainably use the environment using geographical information
We can:
explain how Aboriginal Peoples’ Cultural Knowledges of fire are used to organise, manage and interact with Country
research and explain how people and agencies manage places where bushfires occur
propose strategies to manage a local place where bushfires occur
10 Week Curriculum aligned Program
The 10 week curriculum aligned program incorporates the STEM design process, enabling students to build knowledge and resilience all while fulfilling several syllabus outcomes.
In partnership with Central Coast Council and the Rural Fire Service, Rumbalara offers a fun excursion at Kincumba Mountain (or similar). An incursion can be arranged if more suitable.
Throughout the day, students will participate in practical Fire-Ed Up activities, as well as spending time with volunteers from the Rural Fire Service and their fire trucks and equipment (RFS - excursion only).
