Stage 4 Geography - Water in our World, Incursion or Local Area

About this incursion/excursion

Water is one of our most valuable resources. Students will investigate a local creek or waterway including conducting habitat assessments and water quality tests to assess human impact and environmental health of this critical resource. A full day program can also include a school water audit.

Note: This field work can run in conjunction with a visit to Mardi Dam with Central Coast Council (bookings to Mardi Dam made through Council).

Key Questions:

    1. How do natural and human processes influence the distribution of water as a resource?
    2. What approaches can be used to sustainably manage water resources and reduce water scarcity?

Learning Experiences

Geographical Tools
Students will use a variety of geographical tools to acquire, process and communicate geographical information such as maps, field sketches and water quality instruments e.g. turbidity tubes and pH strips.
Catchment Crawl
Students will participate in a catchment crawl. This includes assessing habitat and water quality at a number of locations along a local creek to investigate water quality (e.g Narara Creek or Wyong River)
Water Audit
If your catchment tour is within walking distance of school the day can include an opportunity to assess water use at the school. Students will be shown how to analyse school water bills and audit the number of taps and water sources in the school to search for leaks and wastage. This water audit is a local school incursion
