High-Potential Gifted Education Program
Environmental Maths Day
Join us for the High Potential & Gifted Education (HPGE) Environmental Maths Day!
The program covers elements of the creative, intellectual and social-emotional domains.
Rumbalara EEC teachers will come to your school as an incursion to encourage students who have an interest in Maths and would benefit from developing their environmental maths skills at a high level.
The identified students will then be invited to participate in in a second environmental maths workshop with a specialised maths teacher and environmental scientist at Bateau Bay Beach.
Program for an incursion
Use your maths skills to explore nature within your school environment!
Students will work in small groups and use their navigation skills to move through 3 activities located around the school grounds.
This session will involve three hands-on team -work activities involving “maths in the environment”. Students will investigate a capture-release scenario to allow them to tally, graph and carry out some biostatistic calculations. Secondly, students will predict tree heights, make a clinometer to determine the actual height and then perform calculations to determine different angle sizes. Lastly, students will use naviagation skills to look for patterns in nature and identify features such as symmetry and tesselation - with a mystery question at the end..
Cost: $5 per student
