Waste

Rumbalara EEC offers waste audits and curriculum support for waste management in schools. We are currently (as at 06.03.24) working with the Department of Education's Infrastructure Unit and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to implement a waste reduction and recycling project in NSW DoE schools. Stage 1 was in 2023 and Stage 2 will commence in Term 3, 2024.

Organisations and groups offering help on the Central Coast

CENTRAL COAST COUNCIL

  1. Resources and support for composting and worm farming for Central Coast residents is available through compostrevolution.com.au  
  2. General information about waste and recycling is available from the council website  and the  1COAST website under their school education tab.

CLEANAWAY

Cleanaway currently provides waste collection services for more than 15 000 commercial customers. Free educational programs on what can be recycled and how waste is collected are available at your school or at the Cleanaway Material Recovery Facility at Somersby. VEOLIA

Veolia has the Whole of Government contract, which began in 2020 (initially it was Suez), for the Hunter and Central Coast Region. Easy, open to all and great for the environment, recycling through the NSW Government container deposit system can also be a highly effective fund raiser for your school. KARIONG ECO GARDEN

Kariong Eco Garden is a place where people can learn about caring for the earth by providing habitat for wildlife, harvesting rainwater, using renewable energy, recycling organic matter and growing food, naturally. TAKE 3

The Take 3 education program aims to excite students to become marine advocates at their campus and within their local area. CENTRAL COAST MARINE DISCOVERY CENTRE

is a centre for education and research specialising in marine, coastal and estuarine environments. GREATER SYDNEY LOCAL LAND SERVICES

Local Land Services (LLS) delivers services to farmers, landholders and the community across rural and regional NSW.

Government contract - public schools: all schools are eligible for recycling services from Cleanaway and other contractors under the 9698 contract.

Council's recycling service

Schools are able to access the council's recycling services, which are charged using the rates under the Business Waste category. Schools would need to complete and lodge the appropriate commercial waste services request form on the Cleanaway website. The principal must sign the form to accept that these charges will be added to a rates account and that a rates notice will be issued to the school.

The coast for 1 x 240L recycling bin/fortnight is $111/year (current 2024) across all Central Coast schools and businesses.
